This page is a record of every manager and head coach to have taken charge of Leeds United throughout the club's history. Excluding caretaker managers, there have been 40 different permanent managers and head coaches that have taken charge of the first team at Leeds United.
Dick Ray became the first to take charge of Leeds in 1919 but did so before the club were elected to the Football League Second Division for the 1920/21 season. Arthur Fairclough took charge of the club's first competitive match on August 28th 1920 so he is the first manager to be recorded in the database.

Dick Ray became the first to take charge as secretary-manager in 1919, before Arthur Fairclough took over in February 1920 and oversaw Leeds United's first ever competitive campaign in 1920/21.
Don Revie remains the club's most successful all-time manager, having won eight trophies in a glorious period having transformed the club from a struggling second division side to one of the finest teams in English football. Under Revie, Leeds won an impressive 395 of his 741 total matches in charge (53.3%), scored a staggering 1264 goals whilst keeping a total of 309 clean sheets.
Leeds' first major honour and became the first English manager to win the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup or UEFA Cup. Leeds United never finished out of the top four in the English top flight between 1965 and 1974. The 1973/74 season saw Leeds crowned First Division Champions for a second time (W24, D14, L4) and set a new Football League record of 29 games undefeated at the start of a campaign.
Don Revie enjoyed the longest spell as the club's manager having spent thirteen years in charge from becoming player-manager in March 1961 before leaving to take the England job in July 1974.
Leeds finished as European Cup finalists in 1975 under Jimmy Armfield having suffered a controversial 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich. Howard Wilkinson remains one of Leeds' greatest ever managers having secured two promotions and transformed a struggling Division Two side into the champions of England in four seasons. Leeds enjoyed two European campaigns under David O'Leary, reaching the semi-finals of both the Champions League and UEFA Cup before the club suffered financial meltdown.
Leeds United won a total of 84 of their 169 matches under Simon Grayson (49.7%) and achieved automatic promotion to the second tier in 2009/10 with a dramatic 2-1 final day victory over Bristol City on May 8 2010.
Howard Wilkinson is regarded as one of the best ever managers the club, and remains the last English manager to win the English top flight in 1992. The 44-year-old had left his role as Sheffield Wednesday manager, who were in the top half of the First Division, to join Yorkshire rivals Leeds on £40,000-a-year four-year deal following two weeks of talks with Leeds chairman Leslie Silver and managing director Bill Fotherby.
He succeeded Billy Bremner as the man in the Elland Road hot seat and was highly recommended for the role by Bobby Robson. He agreed to inherit a side sitting fourth bottom of Division Two. Within his first full season, he had secured promotion to the top flight and transformed Leeds United into champions of England two years later. Leeds won a total of 179 of the club's 412 matches under Howard Wilkinson and kept 143 clean sheets. Don Revie (555) remains the only Leeds manager to have taken charge of more league matches than Howard Wilkinson (332) in the club's history.
Leeds United made headlines across the world when they appointed 62-year-old Marcelo Bielsa as head coach on June 15 2018. Bielsa had secured promotion to the Premier League in his second season after beating beaten by Derby County in the play-offs in his first season, and received worldwide recognition and a series of accolades for the style of play and enthralling football that secured a ninth-placed finish in the Premier League in 2021/22.
Bielsa won the 2019 FIFA Fair Play Award, the 2020 LMA Championship Manager of the Year, finished as a finalist for the 2020 Best FIFA Men's Coach, won the 2021 BBC Match of the Day Premier League Manager of the Season and was the 2021 LMA Manager of the Year Finalist.
The legendary Argentine became only the fourth Leeds manager or head coach to deliver a league title after winning the Championship on 17 July 2020 after a sixteen-year absence from the top flight. He spent three-and-a-half years in charge before leaving his role in February 2022. Marcelo Bielsa became the first head coach or manager in Leeds United's history to win all four of his opening competitive matches in his debut season at the club on August 18th 2018. Bielsa also became the first Leeds manager to win 76 of his first 150 league games in charge of the club on January 16th 2022. Leeds won 80 of the club's 170 matches during his tenure (47.1%).
Darko Milanič holds the unfortunate club record of shortest tenure in charge after Massimo Cellino sacked him after just 32 days. David Hockaday lasted 70 days in the role. Jock Stein left Leeds after 44 days before taking the Scotland job, and Brian Clough's infamous spell at the club also spanned 44 days.
Leeds appointed Daniel Farke as the club's first team manager on 4 July 2023 on a four-year deal until 2027. Farke became the first manager in Leeds United's history to remain unbeaten in his first eight home league games in charge. He also became only the second Leeds manager to win 12 of his first 20 league games in charge after Simon Grayson in 2008/09.
On November 12th 2023, Daniel Farke became the first manager in Leeds United's history to remain unbeaten in his first eight home league games in charge, eclipsing the record held by Dick Ray (7) in 1927. Farke became the first Leeds manager to win five consecutive matches across all competitions at the start of a calendar year on January 24th 2024 and the first Leeds manager to win five consecutive league matches at the start of a calendar year on February 2nd 2024. The German manager also matched an all-time club record which stood for 92 years of nine consecutive league wins on February 24th 2024, an achievement which was only held previously by Dick Ray in 1931.
Daniel Farke was awarded the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month award in November 2023, January 2024 and February 2024, becoming the first Leeds United manager to win three Manager of the Month awards in a debut season. Farke's Leeds reached the Championship play-off final following a 4-0 aggregate win over Norwich City on May 16 2024. Leeds were defeated 0-1 by Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley on May 26th 2024.
